 Synthetic fibers

These are man-made fibers that are made up of a chain of small units called monomers. The monomers bond together to form polymers, which are large single units. The word "polymer" comes from the Greek words poly meaning many and mer meaning part or unit.

Plastics

Plastics are also made up of polymers, and can have either a linear or cross-linked unit arrangement.

Types of plastics

There are two types of plastics:

Thermoplastics: These plastics deform when heated and bend easily. Examples include PVC and polyethylene.

Thermosetting plastics: These plastics cannot be softened by heating after they have been formed. Examples include melamine and bakelite.

Examples of synthetic fibers

Some examples of synthetic fibers include:

Rayon: The first fully synthetic fiber, made from coal, water, and air. Rayon can be mixed with cotton or wool to make bedsheets or carpets.

Nylon: A strong, elastic, and light fiber that is used to make many items, including socks, ropes, tents, and toothbrushes.

Acrylic: A less expensive alternative to wool that can be dyed in many colors.

Uses of plastics

Plastics are used in many applications, both indoors and outdoors. PVC is used to make toys and chappals, while polyethylene is another example of a thermoplastic.
